Developed by Grasshopper Manufacture, the studio behind Killer7 and Lollipop Chainsaw, Killer is Dead is set in a not-so-distant future similar to (but not the same as) the world we know now. Players takes control of an executioner named Mondo Zappa who wields a Japanese sword in his right hand and brandishes interchangeable weapons in his left artificial arm. His ultimate goal is to execute various heinous criminals scattered around the world and beyond.
In addition to close-range attacks with his katana, Mondo Zappa can alter his cybernetically-enhanced left arm into various forms including a gun and a drill. The arm can be upgraded throughout the game. Killing enemies will allow the player to absorb blood and then use this stored blood to launch an "Adrenalin Burst" attack to instantly decapitate enemies. The player can also transform enemies into unspecified "dark matter", before using the Adrenalin Burst to transform dark matter into pure energy.
Described as “a title that picks up where Killer7 and No More Heroes left off” the game will take place in various locations around the world, with settings including old Western-style buildings and Japanese alleyways.
