Set in a diesel-punk styled universe with dystopian, retro-futuristic styling, InSomnia takes place on a gargantuan, half-deserted space station that is slowly making its way towards an elusive planet known only as the Evacuation Point. Inhabited by the descendants of the Normans, a race of people who escaped their home planet several centuries earlier after it became inhospitable due to a cataclysmic conflict, most of the station has long been abandoned and is now known by the remaining inhabitants as the Dump.
Goals and Objectives. These will change as the game’s various Storylines progress and develop. There are a number of interconnected and autonomous goals and objectives in the game, including: Character Advancement, Exploring the abandoned sectors of Object 6 and other locations in the InSomnia universe, investigating and Studying a huge variety of items and their properties, and completing everyday tasks and storyline quests. Players will also have the opportunity to communicate with one another, trade, exchange information, take on PVP and PVE content in groups, and search for difficult-to-find content that will reveal the answers to many questions.
The game world. A complex system in which static and generated locations interact. Static locations are large areas with static layouts and non-variable functions such as NPC’s, quests, economy, zones in which players can communicate and trade with one another, etc. Generated locations are generally smaller areas with procedurally generated layouts and random events that depend on the objectives of the player or group of players.
Narrative development. The plot of InSomnia is divided into Chapters. As players play through the game, storyline content will be constantly updated. So, if a character is created 6 months after launch, their starting conditions will be different from those of a character who was created at launch. Events will unfold in the here and now. The narrative, which develops in real time, will lead the player to Points of No Return where they will be required to make difficult decisions and be prepared to face the consequences of their actions.
Character advancement. Character advancement is based on five stats: Strength, Agility, Intellect, Perception, and Luck. The chosen stats not only define a character’s basic strengths and weaknesses; they also influence their ability to use Skills. To advance, the player needs to improve their character’s Skills and choose Traits. Skills, which influence a character’s relative success in every aspect of the game, develop gradually depending on how frequently they are used. As various skills and their combinations grow, the player will get the opportunity to choose from special traits that will influence various aspects of the game: Professional Traits significantly enhance the statistics of specific skills, Basic Traits influence the game process in general, andAcquired Traits are gained automatically when certain conditions are met and can be either positive and negative.
Battle system. Up to 58 players can participate in a battle in a single location (this number may change once closed beta-testing is finished). Battles take place in real time, and success in both PVP and PVE content depends on intelligent skill distribution, clear role assignment within the group, and an understanding of game mechanics sufficient to predict the enemy’s actions and react in a timely manner.
Survival. The player will frequently be forced to contend with various negative effects that will influence their character, including hunger, fatigue, injury, cold, low oxygen level, etc. The player will need to prepare carefully for each mission by selecting the equipment that will most effectively minimize negative effects. If a player dies in the Dump, they lose all the items in their “Backpack” (inventory). It is possible to return and reclaim a lost Backpack, but “death penalties” make this a difficult proposition. When a character dies, there is a chance that Perma-Death can occur, in which case most character data is erased and the player will have to create a new one to proceed
