Bethesda has finally revealed the first new Doom game in a decade and… we haven’t seen it. In fact nobody has seen it except for attendees at the QuakeCon event in Texas last night. Magazine PC Gamer and others were there though, and according to them the game is not called Doom 4 at all but is a reboot; one that goes back to the series’ roots as the game that originally popularised the first person shooter concept.

The public beta for Doom will only be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, Bethesda has clarified, despite access also being included with the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of Wolfenstein: The New Order.

Doom 4’s troubled development is no secret, but Bethesda and id Software have, until now, been silent about what went wrong behind the scenes. At Quake-Con 2013, IGN spoke with id Software’s studio director, Tim Willits, and Bethesda VP of marketing Pete Hines to find out what led to Doom’s delay, changes, and future. So what went wrong?

Doom 4 is in trouble, and has been for quite some time now, according to multiple sources. Though publisher Bethesda tells Kotaku they still plan to release the highly-anticipated first-person shooter, Doom 4 has gone through at least one major reboot over the past few years, and sources say even today, five years after development started, the game is not even close to complete.

John Carmack kicked off his 2012 QuakeCon keynote by apologizing for Rage. He candidly discussed the driver issues, the marketing challenges, and the end of the game itself, which he characterized as being “not very good.” It was a conversation you rarely see from someone as powerful as Carmack, and it seemed to pull the crowd to his side from the first moments of the speech. It didn’t make everyone happy, however.

The Oculus Rift virtual reality headset has surpassed its $250,000 goal with 4,581 backers pledging $1,121,315 and it still has 28 days to go. During QuakeCon, long time supporter John Carmack told Polygon that Doom 4 would fully incorporate the tech, as a version of Doom 3: BFG Edition already does.

Doom 4 development has been "indefinitely" postponed, a new rumour claims. Studio owner Bethesda apparently has "a serious lack of confidence in the project management at id [Software]", following the "issues and reviews" surrounding the launch of Rage.
