Drakengard 3 will be released for the PlayStation 3 in Europe and PAL territories on May 21st, 2014, Square Enix has announced. To celebrate the news, Square Enix has also released a new trailer featuring the game's opening movie (below).

A prequel to the original Drakengard, Drakengard 3 transports players to a medieval world where six goddess-like sisters known as "Intoners" have brought peace to the earth with their power to manipulate magic through song. Harmony is disrupted, however, when the eldest sister, Zero, attempts to murder her younger sisters with the help of her dragon companion Mikhail. As the story progresses, players find themselves in a battle to unravel the mystery of Zero and learn her true intentions.

Featuring the series' signature brand of action Drakengard 3 pits players against hordes of fiends and foes in remorseless hack-and-slash combat. Quickly switch weapons to launch devastating combo attacks to vanquish enemies that can only be defeated with the correct weaponry. Plus harness the power of your dragon for combat, allowing you to charge, bite, trample your foes and even demolish buildings.

Drakengard 3 will be a digital-only release in Europe and PAL territories and will be sold digitally and at retail in North America. A release date for North America has yet to be confirmed.

Square Enix invited us over as part of the New York Comic Con festivities yesterday, surprising us with a developer driven demo of the just-announced Drakengard 3. The title is on track for a Japanese release this year, with intentions for a North American arrival in 2014. Drakengard 3 will be available for $49.99 next year on the PlayStation 3 and for digital download on the PlayStation Network. Starting today, players can pre-order the game at the Square Enix Online Store.
