Microsoft plans to unveil a new "development partner" for Killer Instinct soon, following yesterday's acquisition of Double Helix by Amazon. Double Helix developed Killer Instinct on Xbox One, and the Irvine Studio was bringing regular updates to the fighter as part of the first season content.

Killer Instinct developer Double Helix Games has been acquired by Amazon, a spokesperson confirmed to Polygon today. Reports first surfaced on TechCrunch; according to the publication, the deal was made for the studio's talent and intellectual properties, while financial terms have yet to be revealed. The deal was reportedly leaked through an invitation for a joint recruiting event for both companies said to take place Feb. 13 in L.A.

Killer Instinct developer Double Helix has detailed the next patch for its Xbox One free-to-play fighting game, which includes a "Jail" system used to punished quitters. The Jail system punishes players whose disconnect percentage goes above 15 percent for a minimum of ten matches.

During the Play XBLA livestream on the 16th January, Double Helix gave away some interesting tidbits on new character Spinal and other updates and fixes coming soon to the game. First off, it sounds like Spinal has been delayed from his original January release window. The team did promise, however, that owners of the KI Ultra Edition will receive him sooner, and that he'll bring with him 15 new achievements for a total of 150 Gamerscore.

An unknown number of Xbox Live subscribers have received an email from Microsoft that offers them a full copy of Xbox One digital launch title Killer Instinct on 22nd November. The email states that the recipient will get a version of the game with all characters unlocked from the off. Further instructions will follow on the 22nd, the day of Xbox One's launch.

Xbox One's free-to-play fighter Killer Instinct will be available at the console's launch with up to six characters, depending on how many you buy. You can download the game for free with one character available but extra fighters will cost £3.99/€4.99 each, Microsoft detailed on its Xbox Wire blog.

At the Evo 2013 fighting game tournament Microsoft showed off a new trailer for Killer Instinct, revealing Glacius and teasing Chief Thunder. Glacius is an ice-based alien character who returns from the original Killer Instinct. In the reboot, developed by Double Helix with help from Rare as an Xbox One exclusive, Glacius has a new look.
