Part of the free-to-play-isation of Plants vs. Zombies 2 was locking certain levels off behind gates, requiring players to farm keys or give in and buy them. That's gone with the latest update, which turns the maps linear and opens up those previously-locked levels. It's not all rosy though, as Gargantuar zombies have been brought back to assault your lawn.

Plants vs Zombies 2 took over two months to move from iOS to Android. For fans that don't have an iDevice, the wait was excruciating. However, PopCap says that they're learning, and promises future releases will come at a much quicker pace. "Going forward, you'll see much closer parity between [iOS and Android]," PopCap's Tony Leamer said.

The game builds on 2009’s original Plants vs Zombies with fresh visuals, plants and zombies, various worlds in which to play (beginning with Ancient Egypt, Pirate Seas and Wild West), and plant food, which lets players supercharge their turrets.

Plants Vs Zombies 2 will be released exclusively on iOS devices on July 18, Popcap Games has announced. The sequel is free-to-play and has been rebuilt as a “live service”, says the studio, with new ways to play the game added regularly.
