Gosh, it’s kind of embarrassing when a video game has grander birthday celebrations than you do. It’s the beginning of May, it’s TERA’s birthday month, and En Masse is going all out with the partytimes. A new raid is on its way, as well as a 20v20 battleground. Hopefully there’ll be ice cream cake hidden in there somewhere, too.

Gameforge has announced that TERA is now free-to-play in North America and Europe. Those interested in joining will need to download a patched version of the game, TERA: Rising, in order to access the F2P options.

The free-to-play launch is accompanied by new content for both PvE and PvP fans. There is a new dungeon, the Crucible of Flame, as well as the Champions’ Skyring 3 vs 3 arena. The Crucible of Flame offers a completely new kind of dungeon experience: As players battle against monsters and bosses at various difficulty levels, they compete for dominance in a ranking system. Challengers who reach the top levels can look forward to valuable rewards. The Crucible of Flame is also home to a brand-new boss monster – the Cyclops.

In the Champions’ Skyring, Arborea’s adventurers can put their skills to the test in 3 vs 3 battles. The victors will be rewarded with the newly introduced Killing Spree Credits, which can be used to obtain special PvP equipment. The top ranked players here will also receive a powerful new skill and the new spectator mode allows fallen heroes to watch the battle unfold from another player’s point of view.

For the release of TERA: Rising, Gameforge have also released a new trailer which shows the graphically impressive landscapes, zones, and monsters of Arborea, as well as the innovative True Action Combat system. It also presents an overview of the new content appearing with the free-to-play launch.

Update: Gameforge has confirmed that TERA will be free-to-play on February 5th.

Orginal Article: Gameforge has announced that in February 2013, the MMO TERA will be switching from its subscription based model to free-to-play. The free-to-play model of TERA will have two base account types: the free user and the veteran.

The free user will receive complete access to the entirety of TERA’s game content. This includes the races, classes, instances, equipment items and player versus player content for example, but also unique features such as the political system. Limitations exist for free users merely in the form of functional option restrictions, such as the number of character slots or the number of safe deposits available.

Players that acquired TERA by purchase will be ranked as veterans and will enjoy free and complete access to all game functions – no matter whether they have a subscription at the time of the switch or not. This will mean more comfort over the free users, for example, with 8 character slots, the complete amount of safe deposits or even a special in-game title, that will help them to stand out as a veteran in the world of Arborea.

Both account types will in addition offer the opportunity to become a member of the TERA Club, which is comparable to the current subscription. Players that currently have a subscription running will receive automatic club membership. Additionally to the content of both account types, members receive further advantages with regard to game comfort: shorter cooldown times for instances, increased experience point yields or an epic mount. For the start of the free-to-play version of TERA, players can also look forward to a brand new dungeon as well as a new arena for 3 versus 3 battles.

TERA's all-new Argon Queen update is now live and available free of charge to players. The update adds significant high-level content to the game, including several new dungeons, the highly anticipated PvP battlegrounds, new character abilities and much more.

In the lair of the sinister argon queen, players will invade Manaya’s Core to confront the queen in an epic battle that will take both might and skill to survive. In addition to the Manaya’s Core dungeon, two new dungeons - Sirkuja Gallery and Argon Corpus - will be revealed with the update, as well as an expanded 20-person raid in the Nexus Traverse. Warrior and lancer classes receive new abilities as well, and the ruthless PvP battlegrounds, in which players compete against each other across servers in action-packed 15-on-15 clashes, are making their debut.

En Masse Entertainment has announced that TERA’s upcoming Argon Queen update, the biggest update the game has seen to date, will be released to players free of charge on August 22nd.

The Argon Queen update will see the introduction of an all-new PvP Battlegrounds mode, which provides competitive players with an environment in which they can wage battles against one another in ferocious 15-on-15 matches - even across servers. TERA’s Battlegrounds mode will pit two teams against each other in a battle for three bases to determine territorial dominance.

Players never know quite what they will face in Battlegrounds, but the general rule is pretty simple: if it moves, kill it. While opposing players are clashing in real-time action combat, BAMs (TERA’s famed Big-Ass Monsters) and other in-game creatures will be present on the battlefield as well, forcing players to make on-the-fly strategic decisions while in conflict. Special in-game loot will be up for grabs, so players will want to be on top of their game to cash in. Weekly rankings will also allow players to track their guild’s progress as well as those of their rivals.

In addition to the new Battlegrounds mode, the Argon Queen update will also feature new character abilities, an all-new 20-person raid experience, new dungeons culminating in a confrontation with the Argon Queen and more.

With TERA launching in May, it’s time to decide who you’ll be playing as in the genre defining action-MMO. In the first video overview looking at TERA’s races, the Castanics step into the spotlight.

A dark race with an even darker history, the Castanics are one of many unique races in TERA. Suffering prejudice and oppression since the demise of their demon god, the Castanics have become independent and self-sufficient, resourceful and hardy. Known for their dark humor and sense of irony, Castanics are inclined to depend upon their innate individual strengths, yet still make valuable allies.
