EA claims that the decision was made due to Steam adopting a set of restrictive terms of service, which limits how developers interact with customers to deliver patches and DLC. Steams Terms of Service agreement forces games to deliver DLC and patches through Steam rather than through a game-specific client, which EA claims 'restricts the ability to connect directly with our consumers'.
The same Terms of Service also saw Crysis 2 removed from Steam due to the new rules violating agreements with Crytex's other download service, also Dragon Age 2 has since been removed.
EA have said that they hope to work out an agreement where Steam can carry Battlefield 3, until then gamers can still pre-order Battlefield 3 for the PC via Origin and over 100 digital retailers worldwide.
