When Xbox One owners finally get access to the Destiny beta next week, they'll find it won't run at 1080p. However, that remains the target resolution for the full game when it launches on September 9. This was revealed during an IGN livestream with Bungie staff (via Eurogamer), who indicated the beta does not hit the vaunted 1080p resolution.

Activision and Bungie have today confirmed the calendar for the highly anticipated Destiny Beta, which will include a diverse sampling of major activities featured in the full game. Fans who pre-order Destiny at participating retailers are guaranteed access into the Beta, which will commence as follows:

• The Beta begins first for PlayStation 4 (PlayStation Plus required for some features) and PlayStation 3 at 17:00pm BST/ 10:00am PDT on 17th July.
• The Beta begins for Xbox One and Xbox 360 (Xbox Live Gold required, subject to change) at 17:00pm BST/ 10:00am PDT on 23rd July.
• The Beta will be offline for scheduled maintenance on 21st July  – 22nd July and open back up to pre-order participants across all platforms until 06:59am BST/ 11:59pm PDT on 28th July.

“As we prepare to launch our first Beta on multiple console platforms around the world, we are excited and eager to open the flood gates,” said Harold Ryan, Bungie’s president.  “We already love to play Destiny and with your help we can be ready for our launch in September.”

Activision and Bungie also revealed today three collector’s edition versions of the game. The Destiny Ghost Edition and the Destiny Limited Edition both of which include the following:

• Limited edition SteelBook Case and Game disc.
• Guardian Folio, which includes Arms & Armament Field Guide, postcards from the Golden Age and an antique Star Chart.
• Collector’s Edition Digital Content Pack, which includes unique Ghost casing, exclusive player emblem, exclusive player ship variant.
• Destiny Expansion Pass, which includes access to two expansions coming post-launch.

In addition, the Ghost Edition will come with the following:

• Ghost replica, featuring motion-activated lights and voice recordings from award-winning actor Peter Dinklage, voice of the Ghost character, the player’s personal companion in the game.
• Letter of Introduction.
• Golden Age Relics, which include a Photo, Patch, Sticker and two Chrome slides of the Traveler
• PlayStation platforms will also include additional exclusive content for Expansion I and II and will remain exclusive until at least Fall of 2015.

For digital pre-order fans, the Destiny Digital Guardian Edition includes a digital download copy of the game, Destiny Expansion Pass and the Collector’s Edition Digital Content Pack.

The Destiny Ghost Edition (£149.99/$149.99), the Destiny Limited Edition (£94.99/ $99.99), the Destiny Digital Guardian Edition (£84.99/$89.99) and the Destiny Expansion Pass (£34.99/$34.99 for the pass, Expansion I and Expansion II will be priced individually at £19.99/$19.99 when they launch) are available for pre-order now.

The Destiny beta takes off on Xbox One and 360 in late July, according to a trailer on the Xbox One dashboard. As per PS3 and PS4, players get beta codes by pre-ordering Bungie's shooter, while an Xbox Live Gold subscription is also required.

Destiny's competitive multiplayer won't be available the second you boot the game up for the first time. Bungie has revealed to Eurogamer that, unlike Halo, you'll need to unlock Player vs Player (PvP) gameplay, which should take you around a couple of hours. Once you've done this with one character, however, it'll be available to all of your other ones too.

Destiny developer Bungie has clarified that you'll be able to play through all of the game's story missions in single-player if you want. "You aren't required or forced to play any story missions in Destiny as part of a co-op group," clarified Bungie community manager Eric "Urk" Osborne on NeoGAF.

Fans who pre-order Destiny at participating retailers worldwide will receive their Beta redemption code while supplies last. To see a list of participating retailers, fans can visit destinythegame.com/wheretobuy.

Upon pre-ordering the game at a participating retailer, players will need to visit bungie.net/beta and follow the instructions on the page to secure their spot in the Beta. The required 9-digit entry code will be printed on their receipt or on a flyer distributed at time of purchase, or sent via email through their respective retail rewards program.

Fans that pre-ordered before October 1st, 2013 and qualify for this offer are automatically entered into the Beta and will receive their entry code from their retailer via email. All questions or concerns related to the Beta code should be brought to the attention of the retailer.

While it remains a possibility in the long-term, hopes of a PC release for Destiny have lessened. Bungie community manager Eric Osborne told IGN that trying to launch on another platform would, quite simply, be so resource intensive that it would jeopardise the quality of the game on other formats.
