Paradox Interactive has today released the latest free content update for War of the Roses, the medieval squad combat title from Fatshark. The new update, titled “Outside the Law,” adds a new map, new weaponry, and new armor to the brutal warfare of War of the Roses, as well as a new method of attack for both Lancastrian and Yorkist archers: fire arrows, capable of igniting a foe from across the battlefield.

“Outside the Law” takes the ongoing war to Greenwood, an all-new forest map whose lush greenery will be spattered with red as armies fight across its hills and valleys, dodging fallen trees and abandoned tent camps. The fire arrows will fly relentlessly from both sides, especially with two new bows available for archers, the Elm Self Bow and the Yew Self Bow.

Hand-to-hand combatants will have to stay moving in order to dodge the fiery volleys, and strike back with new weapons including the Woodsman’s Axe, Headsman’s Axe, Shillelagh Mace, and Quarterstaff. Failing that, they will at least have access to new armor pieces such as the Bycocket Hat to keep them alive.

War of the Roses will play host to a free-to-play weekend this weekend, giving squires the chance to experience knighthood. To participate, check out http://store.steampowered.com/app/230940/.

For the uninitiated and veteran alike, Executive Producer Gordon Van Dyke and company will be hosting a live stream of War of the Roses to show off the fire-packed update and kick off the upcoming free-to-play weekend. Check out the broadcast on February 28th at 7 p.m. GMT (11 a.m. PST) by heading over to the official Paradox Interactive channel on Twitch TV at www.twitch.tv/paradoxinteractive.

Paradox Interactive have announced that War of the Roses: Kingmaker, a gold edition of the game which includes all the DLC released to date, will be available for the PC in late Q1 2013.

A free trial version of War of the Roses is also planned for release on February 6th, which will allow anyone to download and play the game without cost. The trial version will include access to all online battles, enabling aspiring warriors to fight alongside all existing players – paid or trial. The trial version will limit players by disallowing any unlocks, giving access only to the game’s base classes and weapons,

In addition, Paradox will soon release a new premium DLC for War of the Roses, starring the famously boisterous British actor Brain Blessed as a new narrator for the game. Blessed’s booming voice will inspire knights by announcing in-game events and warnings, giving new meaning to the iconic command to “Kill the enemy!”

On top of all of these new editions, all versions of War of the Roses are scheduled to receive new content in the form of the new “Outside the Law” update, which will add an all new deep forest map to the game’s selection, along with armor pieces Robin of Loxley would be proud of.

The first in a series of monthly content updates for the medieval brawler, War of the Roses, is arriving this Wednesday (November 21st), Paradox Interactive has announced.

The update introduces a wealth of new armaments, including the Kingmaker sword, one new helmet, four new visors, and seven new weapons, including the gothic mace, the halberd, and the horn-spanned crossbow. In addition a new suit of heavy armor will also be available in the update with different paint options to customize your characters look.

Players will also be introduced to a new game mode “Pitched Battle,” which challenges knights to take greater care with their lives – since, in Pitched Battle, death is final. Pitched Battle mode will begin an Open Beta when the update arrives, and all War of the Roses players can join. Simply find a game in the server browser that is listed as being in Pitched Battle mode, and join the game normally.

In Pitched Battle, each knight has only one life to risk on the battlefield per round; when a combatant perishes, he cannot return to the fight until the next match. Bandaging wounds and reviving teammates will be crucial to victory, and executing opponents to keep them out of the fight will decide which is the last team standing.

Paradox Interactive and Fatshark have today revealed details on new content coming to the medieval melee action title 'War of the Roses', including brand new sets of weaponry and armor, additional game modes, and some wintry new maps.

This November, War of the Roses will see its first new content drop, which will introduce a wide variety of weapons, including a horn-spanned crossbow for ranged enthusiasts and a Hospitaller pollaxe made famous by the company of knights bearing the same name. Players will also be able to get their gritty hands on the Milanese Knights Hospitaller crafted Heavy Armor, which can be customized with any of 10 different paint options, as well as an assortment of new visors and one new helmet.

Come winter, knights should start preparing for two new challenging game modes and snow-laden maps as the war for the crown of England heads into the harshest months of the year. The first mode being introduced is Pitched Battle, where soldiers for the houses of Lancaster and York will soon learn to value their lives. The upcoming mode will be launching into beta very soon.

Two new maps are also confirmed, inspired by the battles of Wakefield and Towton. With both of these historic skirmishes taking place in an extremely cold winter from December 1460 to March 1461, it’s only fitting that both maps introduce a new weather mechanic that will set snow and sleet against ally and adversary alike.

Content updates will automatically add new items to be acquired in the game. The system is designed to reward players who have invested a lot of playing hours into the game and items will be immediately available for players to redeem though accumulated in-game currency. For those who are too impatient, there are also options to purchase in-game currency to secure content.

The first content update, which will be available in November, is set to include:
  • One new Milanese Knights Hospitaller crafted Heavy Armor, with over 10 paint options to choose from.
  • Seven new weapons: gothic mace, rondel dagger, halberd, Hospitaller pollaxe, horn spanned crossbow, new arming sword, and an Italian side sword.
  • A new helmet.
  • Four new visors.
War of the Roses officially launched on October 2nd and is currently available now on PC for $29.99.

Day-one DLC, season passes, and the like litter the current landscape, and – despite what some might claim – business models do influence game design. It’s unavoidable.
